Descendant of the Crane
by Joan He
(My ARC Review – Two Stars)
I am very lonely in my dislike of this book. Caidyn at BW Reviews is the only blogger I follow who gave the book a non-positive rating (that I saw) and had some similar complaints in this review.
That said, I’ve seen many many glowing reviews, and plenty of bloggers in my orbit have been busy hyping this title, so if it looks like something you’d enjoy, don’t let me discourage you from picking it up.
I’ve been enjoying following Joan He on Twitter, and she seems sharp and funny and generally lovely. While I didn’t like this particular book, I’d absolutely read something else from her.
If you want to hear the positive case for Descendant of the Crane, here are a few reviews to start with:

How to Make Friends with the Dark
Here is what happens when your mother dies.
It’s the brightest day of summer and it’s dark outside. It’s dark in your house, dark in your room, and dark in your heart. You feel like the darkness is going to split you apart.
That’s how it feels for Tiger. It’s always been Tiger and her mother against the world. Then, on a day like any other, Tiger’s mother dies. And now it’s Tiger, alone.
Here is how you learn to make friends with the dark.
